The Alexander work must be sensed!
The Alexander experience is a hands-on restorative reset for your senses. It promotes a general release of the tendency to pull ourselves in, providing a deep sense of "neutral."
This is the result of a system of principles imagined onto our structure that asks,
"How can I make things easier during this act?"
"The experience you want is in the process of getting it. If you have something, give it up. Getting it, not having it, is what you want."
history behind the technique
Frederick M. Alexander was an aspiring orator in the late 19th century but was beset with vocal hoarseness from doing "what came naturally." He questioned whether his tendency to put himself under tension hindered his execution and so, watched in a mirror what he was doing with himself, and struggled towards a way out.
What Alexander created not only helped to encourage him out of habitual sets, but he also developed a style of communicating that very sensation through his hands.
The hands-on work in which an Alexander teacher is trained is used to help support new and unfamiliar movement. Instead of using self-correction by moving (exercise, Yoga, etc.), hands-on influences serve to demonstrate a sense of "non-doing" that can occur for everyone and can be learned.
