My journey with Alexander Technique started with a passion for drumming. In my youth, Ringo Starr was “IT” for me, so I became a drummer, and I loved it.  As I progressed, I ran into difficulty when I noticed I was unconsciously tensing – from my neck, down to my fingertips to play fast rolls. This tension would become somewhat of a musical affliction, throwing off my form and performance.

That’s when I started to recognize it as a pattern, and to seek ways to free myself in order to gain more control of my body while playing. Assessments and exercises, provided by well-meaning drum and music teachers, offered little modification. Determined to find the right solution, I looked to alternative practices and discovered Alexander Technique in 1989. The method provided "conscious refusal of involuntary preparations” which resonated with my needs.  More importantly, it worked, helping me reach an efficiency of movement that heightened my playing skills.  I went on to train for three years at The Alexander Training Institute of San Francisco, to teach the Technique as a way to be able to help other people attain their personal goals.
